Defining Adult Social Care Nursing

The Salford team, led by Professor Claire Pryor, has undertaken a study exploring and defining the concept of adult social care nursing (ASCN), an area of practice that remains under-articulated in the literature. Using a qualitative hybrid concept analysis approach, which combined a comprehensive literature review with focus groups and interviews, the research identifies the antecedents (factors that must be in place before a concept can occur), attributes (characteristics of a concept), and consequences (what happens because of a concept) of ASCN. The findings highlight ASCN as an autonomous, skilled, and career-focused area of practice that supports people with combined health and social care needs to live well within their communities. This work develops an initial definition of ASCN to strengthen recognition, inform policy, and support the future development of the profession.
